My name is Kate and I am 29 years old, I have just found this site andreally hope that you can provide me with some knowledge since Ifeel clueless and overwhelmed with what I am finding online.

I have a 17 monthold little boy and thought most of the symptoms I had were from havinghim. About 3 months ago I started loosing weight pretty fast, I am 110now and was 125 before I was pregnant. My hair is falling out... a lot every day, Theskin on my face is red and pealing, I have night sweats often andtrouble sleeping some nights (not always). I do not feel depressed but often feellike I need to go go go, like rushed for no reason and my heart feelslike it beats fast at times. I am over sensitive to cold (even here in FL) and Iget ringing in my ears. Lately (the past 3 weeks) my throat has felt sore not inside but outside of my neck and I have headaches.
I feel Ok though, not as bad as many other I read about here or on other boards.

After I had many comments on my weightloss from family I called my OB who suggested I get my blood taken totest for a thyroid issue. This was one month ago and I did not fast andthe blood came back normal.
He tested for :
TSH, third generation, my blood was at 2.34
T4, Free, my blood was at 1.0
and a general chem test, all normal.

Thana month later (this past week) I had a general physical for the firsttime in 10 years and she wanted to test my blood for Cholesterol andsuch, I told her about the thyroid test so she said she wouldn't testfor that than but a few other things.

The abnormal result was:
Thyroglobulin Antibodies, my result was 704 and normal was written as under 20

Other results that were normal were
Thyroid Peroxidase, mine was 33
Ferritin, mine was 58
b12, mine was 527
folate serum, mine was 17.6
and quite a few others are in the normal range (my cholesterol was in the high normal, 200)

I saw her today and she said I have Hashi's and with this high number of antibodies I have a lot of inflammation. She mentioned armour medication but that it was off the market now and that she likes to start patients with 25 mcg of synthroid and than a blood test in 6 weeks to test just TSH and T4 to see where we are. and than raise the meds. She said my thyroid felt a little enlarged.

I have always been very healthy so I am not excited by the thought of having to take a pill for the rest of my life so I am getting a second opinion by a holistic Dr. (Dr. Erika Bradshaw in Brandon FL) in the first week of Jan. and not filling the RX for synhroid for now.

My main questions are where do I go from here? What should I do in the meantime while I wait to see the Dr.? Is it for sure that I have Hashi's and what could have brought this on (pregnancy, labor, having mono years ago, being on BC for many years, being very stressed this last year). I do not feel "that" bad, should I really medicate myself?

Feeling very confused and just not sure where to go from here and would really love and advice.

Hello KMaxine,

Take some time and look over my home page. It is designed for the newly diagnosed. Don't feel you need to make a ton of decisions at once. It is overwhelming.

One comment - there are great alternatives to Armour. I am on Naturethroid which is just like Armour but from a pig's gland. I recommend starting with a natural thyroid supplement but you may need to find a natural doctor to help you. It is usually not that expensive if you have all your test results for them to look at and get them to prescribe a natural treatment. But that is just my advice. Read "my story" which you can see from my home page on a link.

I think you are on the right track by getting a second opinion. Be assured you need not rush the medication since your TSH is in the normal range and you are not dealing with overwhelming symptoms at the moment. Take the time to research between now and the second doctor's appt.  There are many options - if you are interested in natural care, look around my website and blog for ideas. You are in a great position to make decisions that will really make a difference overall.

Good luck and try to relax. It can really be overwhelming especially when you are first diagnosed. Check out my article posted on the forum on the top "Living Better with Hashimotos Thryoiditis". It is a great place to "start" for the newly diagnosed.

Come back and let us know how you are doing.

Hang in there!
