Hello,
I was just diagnosed about a month ago. Here is my story.Back in early 2003 my doctor felt a nodule in my thyroid and ordered asonogram. They concluded there was nothing to worry about. That wasthat and I let it go.
Well back in May I really became concernedwith my major cold intolerance of many years and decided to look intoit. My thyroid tests (free T4 and TSH only) came back normal in May.This was a new doctor, now that I didn't have insurance anymore. My gutwas telling me there was still something wrong with my thyroid. Mymother takes Synthroid, but has also had 3 kids and told me it was fromthat. So in June I got the Mirena IUD. Two months later I came downwith the WORST depression. I almost dropped out of college. My doctorput me on Prozac....and that was hell. I felt like a robot- and had nolibido or ability to have an orgasm. Might be TMI, but its a supercommon thing with Prozac. After a month I lost it and stopped theProzac and pulled out the IUD MYSELF!! Within days I was feelingsomewhat better. During this time I had seen an endocrinologist (had toreally push for the doc to make my appt with her) at the clinic I wentto. She seemed pretty unconcerned after a simple interview...then shefelt my thyroid. It was 1.5 to 2 X's bigger than it should be and oneof the nodules was at least 1cm in diameter. She ordered the antibodiestest and it came back positive. I was told in a letter, and advised todo nothing. She also ordered a sonogram and said it was likely theywould do a needle biopsy. I can't get these test because I have nocoverage, sigh.
Oh and I also have some uterine fibroids. I amtold by the endo that they are not linked. Some think they are. Don'tknow what to think about that.
I don't want to do nothing! I'm anormal weight 5'7" 135lbs (been vegetarian for 15 years) so I don'tseem a likely candidate for hypo, but I feel the memory loss, thebrainfog and the cold intolerance. It could be in the 60's and I wouldbe shivering. I was told "you're just a cold person"
Now for thelast couple of weeks, when I eat wheat, I feel like total crap. Thebrainfog is worse, and I feel like I'm going to throw up for hours.Just got married and turned 30 and I feel so old and tired. Worriedabout fertility issues too as we want to wait a few more years. His exmiscarried from thyroid issues, and I suspect my friend who justmiscarried this week has it too. She mentioned that she suspected itand her throat is always sore but hasn't gotten it checked because she"didn't want to know"
I guess I'm going on for a while but thisis all new and I'm experiencing no help from the medical world, andtrying to get through my senior year of college and its so hard-especially the brainfog and the energy level issues. My outer throat issore and and sometimes it feels like a finger is poking my thyroidarea. Just want to address this before it gets any worse. I'm going totry going wheat free, and it seems there may be a connection. I havealso read that the Mirena (hormone upset) could be a factor. This seemslike a good forum and its comforting to read others posts. How can theignorance of doctors be so epidemic!?
