Dear all,

I'm a 33 y.o woman who has always been so healthy that my friends are lining up for when I pass away because they reckon all my organs must be in excellent conditions. ....except for the thyroid I guess.

In Dec 2007 I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and was put on a Oroxine (the only medication I take on a daily basis). The blood tests have shown that my thyroid is working properly. The docs also found I have fibroids and to prevent so much bleeding I take Tranexamic acid during the heavy days only.

This is the first time that I type anything at a forum but I would appreciate answers to the following:

1. Were you diagnosed after a huge emotional event in your life? (In my case after a traumatic divorce)
2. Did you consume soy products before that? (In my case - 8 years of soy milk and yogurt)

The biggest question at the moment has to do with the subject of my post.  I had a big genital rash during my first period after starting oroxine. The doctor thougth it could be related to haemorroids or even a nappy rash type and prescribed ointments that made it worse. However it only lasted during the period.

The second month the annoying itching/painful rectum wave started and lasted until the period finished.

The third month it started with the ovulation period and I chose to ignore it and only breath deeply everytime I felt my rectum like burning.

This month has been the whole! And I'm getting so desperate that I read in the net and I found so little about it. My GP has imply that I have to put up with this because they can not stop Oroxine. She ruled out candidiasis, thrush or any of those as vaginal and rectal tests came clear. Also no haemorroids were found.

The thing is that I have anal fisures that are deep and don't bleed that much. It's only itching and in my ignorance I'm wondering if because of oroxine my alcanility down there has turned acid??? So I get constantly burned and if I put an ointment I create a bomb?

Has anyone suffered something similar? Please help me because I can't sleep and last night I even tried honey because I heard that heals wounds.

Many thanks in advance for sharing with me your symptoms/solutions.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I'm going to try to address all your questions but first of all I will respond to what I believe is the most important part of your post... the obvious connection between your new medication and your cycle/symptoms. It sounds to me that you are sure there is a connection. That being the case, I recommend you follow your instincts and either demand a different medication or consider finding a natural doctor in your area for a consultation (I highly recommend the latter).

For some reason I have never heard of Oroxine and that surprises me since I've had this forum for a long time. I did look it up though and I don't see side effects for the symptoms you are having - although there is mention of muscle cramps but that is not likely what you are experiencing.

I would definately seek help outside of the doctor you are currently seeing. It would be wise to seek out a natural thyroid supplement instead like Naturethroid or Armour which supply the body with all the components natural to the thyroid gland (well at least in the animal thyroid glands they are derived from).

I would also ask you some questions about any other changes in your diet or supplement routine in the last few months. Here's a step-by-step guide I wrote on how to eliminate possible culprits....

http://www.ehow.com/how_2080117_live-better-hashimotos-thyroiditis.html

On the hemmroid/anal pain... I have had internal fisures before after my second pregnancy. It was very painful. I saw great improvement when I ate only soft food (fruits, veggies, a lot of water) for a few days to help eliminate pressure in the area. That allowed them to heal over time and kept the area from being irritated and inflammed. If you don't have hemmroids, I am not sure where you are putting the honey. If there are any outer lesions, I would consider putting aloe vera gel which soothes and promotes healing after each trip to the bathroom.

And yes, I was diagnosed with Hashi's after a severe court battle after a divorce. Also, I had been eating soy to "be healthy" until I found out it also suppressed the thyroid gland! Sad I am hoping to get a poll on top of this forum where we can compare possible triggers to this disease.

Please feel free to post another topic and/or reply to this post. I hope others will join in with their assessments of your situation too.

Most importantly, please seek out a natural, caring, doctor that will offer you alternatives to the drug you are currently taking and let you see if these symptoms are reduced or eliminated in the process.

Hope this helped a bit.

Dear Mo, many thanks for taking the time to read my post and sharing with me your experience.
I have always thought there is a connection between the mind and the body (otherwise something as simple as feeling a need to go the toilette when one is nervous or butterflies in the tummy when in love wouldn't occur).

I don't know you're story but in my case a 12 years relationship was broken by him in a very very nasty way and that was traumatic. The doctors say there's no connection and that Hashimoto's and the Fibroids were just bad luck. I refuse to believe that but I had to take the medication because I was litterally bleeding to death every month (periods lasting 15 days) and all the bad sides of Hashi. I have also been doing lots of Yoga.  People call me dreamer but I believe in my body and hope there is a chance to get my hormones back on track.

I highly recommend a book called Solved: The Riddle of Illness by Stephen Langer. It helps understanding how can the thyroid affect the rest of the body and there is a whole chapter about Hashimoto's. The highlight is that he highly recommends Armour just as you did. Btw, I'm in Australia and Oroxine is apparently the only medication provided for my case. I went two days ago to the doc to ask for a change of drug with no luck. I was referred to the Endocrinologist but my appointment is not until next month. In the meantime I'm trying a new ointment .

However I made an appointment with a doctor that practices chinese medicin - it's next week and I promise to share with you guys the conclusions after seeing him.

I will have a look at the document you wrote on the diet issue and let you know what my experience has been.

all the best and many thanks.

E.

Hello Egypt,

I like your attitude. Not giving up is the best thing we can do for ourselves. And yes, Solved: The Riddle of Illness is the first book that ever gave me hope. Since then I have found numerous avenues to hope and love to find them as I go. I also recommend that book for anyone feeling "hopeless" or "unheard" by the traditional medical field.

As far as divorce, I was left for another woman after 7 years of marriage while I was 8 months pregnant with my second child. My other child was 2 at this point. It was a very difficult time. There were a lot of nasty lies during the divorce and my ex tried to take my children away from me. The wedding plans with the other woman were being made while I was waiting for the birth of his baby. It is very sad to think about how someone can be so cruel. I used to think, out of respect, could he have waited until after his baby was born but then I realized, if he respected me, he wouldn't have had an affair to begin with. After that there was a "lull" and then after I was remarried about 5 years later, my ex got involved in a cult and began to abuse my children. After a long and difficult court battle, they were adopted by my new husband which was absolutely wonderful but this happened way too long after years of abuse to both me and the children. All this happened just prior to my diagnoses with Hashimotos. I don't really care what the doctors say, we know our bodies and whether we are pre-disposed to it or not, doesn't matter to me. The fact is that stress was the precurser and we know it!

Does this mean it can be reversed? Well, I think so! I don't think it will be easy and I believe emotions may have a lot more to do with it than we think. But I am certain I will not give up! I believe EFT is the closest I've come to finding the emotional answers so far. I believe in God and have prayed years for the freedom from my emotional bondage but now realize that there are a lot of "stuck" emotions in the trauma I experienced back then. I have felt a great release through EFT and can now talk about painful situations from the past (not all since I haven't worked on all yet) without physical reactions. This tells me that in the future, I will respond more naturally to similiar situations without my emotions causing me physical stress. I'm so excited to have found this way of healing my emotions. Now I am free to choose different responses where I wasn't before. I highly recommend EFT to others. I'm even thinking about becoming a practioner due to the success in my own life!

I encourage you to continue in the Yoga - especially if you are feeling better because of it. It's wonderful that you are so motivated to do whatever it takes. That's why I started this forum. Many of us have family and friends that just can't understand what we are going through. It helps to have a place to go where others understand our goals and why.

Please keep us updated on your chinese medicine doctor's visit. I hope you will find encouragement in it.

Thanks for posting!

Dear all, as promised this the report re. visiting the chinese medicine practicioner.

He checked my tongue (both sides), pulse, feet and legs (mainly touching specific points) and let me know that I have some blood circulation issues.

Re. the hormones (our common factor): yes I do have an imbalance which is a product of a prolonged deep sadness. He assured me is possible to get them back in order with both acupuncture and herbal medicines. As per the fibroids, they will also dissapear so eventually I'll be free from medication!

He put me on oriental tablets (which really are round and are like kids lollies - so small that can swallow 12 in one go) for the fibroids and the rash. In ONE day the itchiness stop and even better the wounds have closed! So I have been able to live a normal life/ sleep again!

He will put on natural thyroid very soon and will check my IODINE from urine next week.

Of course, as we know, a balance between excercise and good diet is a must. I asked him about Soy products and he wasn't sure about the connection with thyroid but suggested is better to be safe than sorry.

That's it - I'll keep you posted of the treatment or anything else that I consider might be useful to you all.

Have a good weekend.

Hi Egypt!

Thank you for the update! On the "deep sadness issue": is it dealt with emotionally through accupuncture? That's interesting. Does he believe that Hashimoto's Disease can be reversed? If so, can you share his method of addressing that in his practice?

It's great to have you troubleshooting here with us.

May you feel much better and continue to have great success!

Dear all, I've just arrived from my second visit to the acupunturist.

I used Mo's exact words 'Is Hashimoto reversibleHuh?" his answer was YES and he has succesfully treated several patients in the past. The treatment varies per person as he doesn't focus on the thiroid only but in the whole body and as you know: weight, lifestyle, diet, etc. But generally it's acupuncture and herbs. . He reckons in my case in about 6 to 8 months I should be free from both: Hashi & Fibroids! He also says the Iodine intake is a KEY factor in thyroid/uterus function and that's why he wanted to test my urine

A week has passed and no itchiness in my rectum and I'm due to have my period in about three days. In the past this was the peak of the problem and when I was so irritable that couldn't talk to anyone. So just imagine how happy I am!!!

FYI the name of the chinese medication for this skin problem is XIAO FENG SAN. I asked for the link between this plant-based 'lollie' and he said it works by removing heat from the blood    Curious me asked where does the blood get the heat from...several ways and the effect of the Oroxine and/or Tranexamic Acid could be one. Stress is the common monster in any situation as you know.

So there you go....I'll keep you posted of any progress.....and please my apologies in advance but I'm very curious about the body and observe everything that comes out of mine (poo, urine and blood). So my next period is going to be interesting because of the fibroid treatment he's put me on. Also some needles were placed to prevent me from bleeding heavily and read this: AVOID CLOTS - which are considered NOT NORMAL!!!

No one has ever told me that..and for some months I've seen some the size of flat mangoe coming out of me!  ....but he explain to me today that if thebody is OK...the blood is meant only to flow...not for the endometrium to fall into nasty pieces!

 ...I'm growing I guess!!!

Have a good day/afternoon/night....and till the next visit.

Hi Egypt,

Glad to hear from you! I really enjoy the way you are determined to be in tune with your body! We do need to look at all functions of the body for clues and it's good for you to remind us all to do that.

It's exciting to hear that someone believes Hashi's is reversable. Please stay with us through this process so we can have a documented "journey" of one who achieves this perceived "un-achievable goal" in the traditional field of medicine! I am so excited for you. I am also on the same journey... to document what I am hoping to see as a reverseable case of Hashi's. Could you imagine if we were able to show this can be done to the world? Right here on this "insignificant" forum? I believe we can find much success together as we search for the answers.

Removing heat from the blood... interesting. Sounds a bit like inflammation in my "non-doctors" lenses. We know that inflammation is a giant culprit in any autoimmune disease. That alone gives us a starting point! Please keep us posted on any changes you might feel. This is really exciting.

It's amazing you could be accepting something as "normal" over the years, only to find out it's really not. That's how I felt about palpitations. I thought everyone had them! Blood clots would be a good thing to eliminate too! Smiley

Take care and looking forward to hearing more on your journey.

Dear all, I'm back after my third visit to the acupuncturist. But before going into those details I would like to share with you my happiness about a much better looking period!! I'm in my last day and this time I ONLY had to take ONE tablet of tranexamic acid a day compared to the FOUR before I started my treatmen. I noticed the blood flew easily and also slept through every single night. I haven't experienced this for 11 months!! So I'm very proud of my body

More questions to him...this time about the connection of my 'deep sadness" with thyroids etc...interestingly enough he told me Chinese medicine takes emotions and physical issues in one package. In few words Lungs, Splee, Liver & Kidney for example respond to Grief, Worry, Anger & Fear respectively. As soon as I arrived I googled it and found a good link  (http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/anxietydepression/a/EmotionsTCM.htm ) however if you can't open it I copied and pasted it for you (please see below).
I'll keep posting my progress or any other piece of information that I might find useful to all of us.
Regards,

Egypt

In traditional Chinese medicine, emotions and physical health are intimately connected. Sadness, nervoustension and anger, worry, fear, and overwork are each associated with aparticular organ in the body. For example, irritability andinappropriate anger can affect the liver and result in menstrual pain, headache, redness of the face and eyes, dizziness and dry mouth.
A diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine is highlyindividualized. Once an organ system is identified, the unique symptomsof the patient determine the practitioner's treatment approach.
Using the liver again as an example, breast distension, menstrualpain, and irritability during menses are treated with certain herbs andacupuncture points, and migraines headaches, dizziness, andinappropriate anger with redness of the face point to a different typeof liver pattern and is treated in a different way.
What does the liver have to do with migraines? Organ systems in thetraditional Asian sense may include the Western medical-physiologicalfunction, but are also part of a holistic body system. The liver, forexample, ensures that energy and blood flow smoothly throughout thebody. It also regulates bile secretion, stores blood, and is connectedwith the tendons, nails, and eyes.
By understanding these connections, we can see how an eye disordersuch as conjunctivitis might be due to an imbalance in the liver, orexcess menstrual flow may be due to dysfunction in the liver'sblood-storing ability. Besides emotions, other factors such as dietary, environmental, lifestyle, and hereditary factors also contribute to thedevelopment of imbalances.
Spleen
  • Emotions - worry, dwelling or focusing too much on a particular topic, excessive mental work
  • Spleen Function - Food digestion and nutrient absorption.Helps in the formation of blood and energy. Keeps blood in the bloodvessels. Connected with muscles, mouth, and lips. Involved in thinking, studying, and memory.
  • Symptoms of Spleen Imbalance - Tired, loss of appetite, mucusdischarge, poor digestion, abdominal distension, loose stools ordiarrhea. Weak muscles, pale lips. Bruising, excess menstrual bloodflow, and other bleeding disorders.
Lung
  • Emotions - grief, sadness, detached.
  • Lung Function - Respiration. Forms energy from air, and helpsto distribute it throughout the body. Works with the kidney to regulatewater metabolism. Important in the immune system and resistance toviruses and bacteria. Regulates sweat glands and body hair, andprovides moisture to the skin.
  • Symptoms of Lung Imbalance - Shortness of breath and shallowbreathing, sweating, fatigue, cough, frequent cold and flu, allergies, asthma, and other lung conditions. Dry skin. Depression and crying.
Liver
  • Emotions - anger, resentment, frustration, irritability, bitterness, "flying off the handle".
  • Liver Function - Involved in the smooth flow of energy andblood throughout the body. Regulates bile secretion, stores blood, andis connected with the tendons, nails, and eyes.
  • Symptoms of Liver Imbalance - breast distension, menstrualpain, headache, irritability, inappropriate anger, dizziness, dry, redeyes and other eye conditions, tendonitis.
Heart
  • Emotions - lack of enthusiasm and vitality, mental restlessness, depression, insomnia, despair.
  • Heart Function - Regulates the heart and blood vessels.Responsible for even and regular pulse. Influences vitality and spirit.Connected with the tongue, complexion, and arteries.
  • Symptoms of Heart Imbalance - Insomnia, heart palpitations andirregular heart beat, excessive dreaming, poor long-term memory, psychological disorders.
Kidney
  • Emotions - fearful, weak willpower, insecure, aloof, isolated.
  • Kidney Function - Key organ for sustaining life. Responsiblefor reproduction, growth and development, and maturation. Involved withlungs in water metabolism and respiration. Connected with bones, teeth, ears, and head hair.
  • Symptoms of Kidney Imbalance - Frequent urination, urinaryincontinence, night sweats, dry mouth, poor short-term memory, low backpain, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, and other ear conditions.Premature grey hair, hair loss, and osteoporosis.

HI Egypt,

I'm so happy to hear you are encouraged through this new doctor and that your cycle is showing a ton of signs of improvement! That's awesome. It is so fun to read your posts!

This will be short because I have company coming soon but the relationship between emotions and health is so amazingly real. This is similar to what I'm doing with NAET, EFT and BSFF. The emotions are worked on with NAET after the basic allergies are cleared. EFT and BSFF can be done independently, with a friend or family member, or a professional. A chiropractor in the office of where my NAET doctor just moved from was into NET which is chiropractic linked with emotion points similar (if not exactly connected) to the emotions you stated in your post. Thank you for getting them on the board. There are numerous ways for us to explore these emotions. Everyone needs to figure out what makes sense for their personal needs (religion, personality, etc.) but I have found that EFT has had the most powerful immediate results and NAET and BSFF has had the most subtle but significant, long term results. I will be very interested in the results you have with your emotions. The past is usually worked on first but we have "habits" that could keep us enslaved to "negative beliefs" and those can be addressed as we study our responses to events and things that come up in our lives. This has been such a journey and knowing there are answers I hadn't known about before, is what keeps me going. Smiley

Thanks again and looking forward to more from you.

Have a great weekend.

Ok...now my report after seeing the endocrinologist.

I told her the whole story about my fissures, etc and also that the chinese medicine helped me. She said she has never heard about a reaction like this however asked to continue with the chinese stuff for 2 more months - then stop it and see if the reaction occurs again. If so....I have to stop Oroxine and be referred to a dermatologist.

I was rather sad to listen to her saying with a very 'sure' tone of voice that eventually I won't have a thyroid at all because of Hashimoto's and that my dosis of Oroxine will be increased. I felt like 'you fit in the formula and that's how it is".

All I could think in my head was...'NO WAY' - I refuse to believe that I fit in the chemical-addiction bussiness!!!

So ..I have to wait but hopefully in two months the reaction will be different: overactive thyroid!!  meaning that my medication needs to be decreased....heading towards healing.

Cheers to you all,

Egypt

Hi Egypt,

Yes, I've heard the words before loud and clear also! The traditional doctors never give hope for this disease. I wish I hadn't listened to them at the beginning. I would have been further down the healing road. Keep up the good attitude and don't expect the traditional field to partner with the alternative/natural road you are excited about. You may have to find a doctor (natural) that will be able to prescribe your thyroid meds while pursuing the chinese medicine at the same time. That is what I am doing. One doctor (alternative) is monitoring my thyroid meds while my NAET doctor is doing the treatments. I have not done a thyroid test for a while so I am not sure what my tests will show but I am feeling better on one fourth of my highest dose right now. My NAET doctor is using muscle testing to figure out the right dosage. I believe I was over medicated for a long time. I won't find out how my thyroid is really functioning (at the cellular level) until I get the test in September) but I am encouraged. If my thyroid is really so far destroyed (not saying it can't be), how can I exist better on one fourth of the dosage with less symptoms? Just a thought in the back of my mind --- and I've been diagnosed with Hashi's for about 15 years! You would think too much damage has been done. But I have been doing alternative treatments for about 5 years now - all the time feeling better. It's been a long road though - there have been encouraging times and discouraging times.

My recommendation - traditional doctors generally give your thyroid a "death sentence" so that's what you are going to get when you see them. Their protocol is on paper and "black and white". If you think outside that "box", you will not get cheerleading from them.

Keep up the good attitude and consider a different "partner" for prescribing the correct thyroid meds.

Keep us posted.

Hi Egypt!

I am catching up with the group after being off the forum for a few months. Welcome!!!

To answer a few of your questions:

1.  Yes, I was diagnosed after an emotional/stressful period of my life--after birth of second child...working from home with very stressful deadlines and work while trying to help 1st child deal with addition of baby and taking care of baby...no help from anyone--husband at work most of the time...among other things (sick friend and her death and illness of her child...).

2.  Yes, I had been drinking soy milk and eating other soy products for about 5 years. Shortly before pregnancy with second child my MD recommended I switch to raw cow or goat milk (organic, pastured). I did.

About the anal fisures, have you had constipation (present or past)? With a slow down in metabolism due to being hypothyroid, constipation is a common symptom and can cause anal fissures. Just thought I'd throw that out there, but that might not apply to you because you said you are not hypo, right?

When I think of vaginal or anal itchiness, I alway think of yeast (which you said was ruled out) or parasites. Another possibility that comes to mind is allergy. What do you use to collect your blood when you have your period? Tampons, pads, cup? Maybe you are reacting to a chemical in a product. If you have hashimoto's, which is an autoimmune disease, your immune system is not functioning optimally and could be reacting to things it did not use to???

So, I see more posts of yours. I will keep this response to your first questions in case someone else reads and has similar problems.

I am glad to read that you are having much success with Chinese Medicine!

Did your Endo or Ch. Med doc ever talk to you about WHY your body is attacking your thyroid? Wondering what your thoughts are on the possible root causes and if they are, at all, looking to help you treat the root cause?

All the best to you!

Dear All I'm back after a marathon with GPs this week. I'll itemised everything.

1. Had a SCAN that did not show changes in my fibroids and suggested endometriosis
2. Gynecologist today said will check everything again in 4 months.
3. GP - gave me results of:

- Iron levels (all good)
- Mrs. Thyroid! (excellent) - I was hoping to be hypethiroid because I hate oroxine as it makes my bum sore!
- No herpes (oh I forgot to tell you that the 'little cracks/fissures' are starting to appear in my pubic area!
- Pap-smear (excellent)

So...I was like...and then what am I suppose to do whith my bum???

In 3 weeks I will be referred to the dermatologist because evidently I am allergic to a component of the medication. Not to the hormone itself but a chemical or preservative!!! Can you believe this?Huh

Also - answering to previous questions:
NO I don't suffer of constipation; I haven't changed my diet; No changes in PAD either....my fisures are definitively caused by oroxine.

Regards to you all and we need to keep strong and close to keep ourselves up

Hi Egypt,

Thank you for the update. You may not believe what I am going to say but a NAET doctor would first and foremost treat your medication (if you must take it). It takes 25 hours to be clear of the allergen and depending on which doctor you go to, the treatment cost (besides the consultation at the beginning which should be between $75-$150) would be no more than $75. Mine is $40 but I'm in a rural area so their fees are lower.

A true NAET doctor will always treat your medications first since they are going into your body every day and cause side effects. I would highly recommend this instead of treating the symptom with a dermatogist. In the end, your ongoing costs for that particular treatment would be nothing. With a dermatologist, it can be ongoing.

I won't lie, the NAET doctor would likely find other allergies that are keeping you down but they can actually pinpoint the cause of the symptoms quite accurately and suggest the course of action. Remember, with NAET, the treatment is permanent. This is why I continue. She treated my thyroid medication first because I was having palpitations from it. The palpitations are gone and have been (from the medication) since the treatment 9 months ago. What was the reason you couldn't take a natural preparation? I can't remember. I would also highly recommend finding a different choice for your meds. Oh yes. I believe you can't get to natural due to your location? Was that it?

Either way, you can deal with it through NAET. Some advertised NAET doctors do not practice it precisely the way NAET is supposed to be administered. I had a friend whose NAET doctor did not practice it correctly and all her allergies were not cleared. It is a simple process that should not be mixed with other practices normally. There used to be a statement on the founder's website about this at www.naet.com but I couldn't find it as I looked right now. You might want to look around for that statement.

Keep me posted. You're persistence is an inspiration.
