Hi There!
I read that with Hashi's your heart rate can slow, and I have only noticed this in myself in the past 2 weeks or so. My heart rate now is somewhere between 60 and 70. Sometimes when towards the low 60's I get a bit frightened as I know I am quite unfit so it should be more towards 75-85. Is it dangerous to have a slow heart rate at all? Or should I just put up with it?

Hello,

I can answer this from experience, not as a doctor. My heart rate got the slowest when I was put on steriods. From research I had done at the time, I found that hypothyroid patients should not be on steroids due to drug interactions. I get the feeling we are always dealing with either drug or substance interactions when we have thyroid problems. Our systems tend to run too fast or too slow at times and it is important to know what other substances might be contributing to those symptoms.

My question would be:

Are you presently taking any other drugs that could have the side effect of slowing your symptom down? Side effects of other drugs (in my life) were commonly blamed on my thyroid condition but in reality, were remedied when I stopped the offender. Just a thought.

Also, check your body temperature. If your body temperature is also low, work on reducing foods that are known to be thyroid suppressors like broccoli and soy. Eat higher energy foods like coconut oil which will help speed your heart rate without drugs.

This is a detective game. Each one of us are at a certain place due to contributors we may have to investigate on our own. I know that no one could have figured out what was going to help me better than myself. I knew I was drinking this, eating that, reacting this way or that, etc. Take some time to keep a log of what you are putting into your body (and your mind) and be a detective. There could be some significant help in this process.

Having said all this, there also could be a need to change your dose of medication. If your heart rate is slow and you are not on natural thyroid supplements which include T3, you may not be converting the straight T4 which is all you are getting with Synthroid and the like. This alone could really help your energy and heart rate.

I hope some of this helps. Let us know what you find out. And, remember as you play detective, none of us our perfect so don't be embarrassed to say what you've found. I used to have a soda in the afternoon and wondered why I was having a hard time falling asleep. I cut the caffeine out and "viola", I was able to relax and fall asleep at night (this was years ago but I had to check my diet for clues).

Hi Mo!
Thanks for the advice! I will give it a shot. Other steroids that I have been taking in the last few weeks is a Seretide inhaler for my asthma.  However, please note that I am currently on no thyroid medications at all. I am waiting for a blood test at the end of July to double check whether I need to be or not.
I am also not allowed to have caffeine any more as it makes my heart beat quite hard and fast. Its amazing how your body can change so quickly, just a couple of months ago I used to drink a can of coke per day. Suppose my teeth are happy about this new diagnosis haha!

Anywho.. I will research what kinds of products suppress the thyroid and try to stear clear of these. I get infrequent anxiety, but when it happens, its quite bad, so Im not sure whether foods that increase thyroid activity will be a good idea.

I'll experiment with a new diet and let you know how I go
