Hi Everyone,
My teenage daughter was diagnosed with H.T. last April. She has been on Levothyroxine since then. Her Thyroid levels have been normal since she went on the meds. She felt a lot better until about 3 months ago when she began feeling really tired all of the time again. Right now she is extremely fatigued- more tired than I have ever seen her. I have brought her to her primary physician who ran blood work. All her levels are fine, except her iron is a little low and her glucose level is low. Her primary said to give her an iron supplement.

She is also a vegetarian. She has had a sensitive stomach since she was little. We thought she might be lactose intolerant. Now I am thinking that maybe she has Celiac Disease. I have read that there is a correlation between HT and celiac. The only symptoms she has are a sensitive stomach and extreme fatigue.
Any adivice??Thank you!!!

Hello Jessie's Mom,

You are on the right track. If you can get someone to test your daughter for Celiac OR gluten intolerance, this would be a very smart thing to do. See my home page for extra info in this regard.

I have found it to be VERY difficult to stay with traditional medical doctors when it comes to Hashimoto's and even Celiac. They simply don't have meds to treat these diseases, therefore, they tend to offer no real help. Finding a natural doctor, although sometimes a bit more expensive, normally offers great rewards as they guide you through natural treatments - which cannot be found in the traditional field.

Check out my last blog post about reversing Hashimoto's. You may be able to get some help there and get a consultation with my doctor or look up a doctor that can look at your daughter system wide. The problem with traditional medicine is that they see a body in all different "compartments" and the body just doesn't work that way. It makes so much sense to me now. If your car's battery goes out, there is not a good mechanic anywhere that does not also check the health of the alternator and charging system before making a definite diagnoses. The battery may be getting drained because of a weak alternator which is the thing that needs the most attention. Our bodies function in a similar way. This is why thyroid treatment with a pill alone fails miserably.

Gluten intolerance would be the next thing I would check. Also, if your daughter is a vegetarian (how long has she been one?), you may be dealing with some diet issues (low protein) in addition. A good doctor could pinpoint the problem through testing the different systems of the body.

Hope this helped. I hope your daughter feels better soon.

Thanks so much for your advice. I just got a referral ,from a nurse friend of mine, to a natural/wholistic dr. He is supposed to be excellent. I will take her to see him. I also called the pharmacy today and I will be requesting that she receive Synthroid (not the generic Levothyroxine). I heard that can make a difference too. I will be taking a look at her diet too.

I will keep you updated. Thank you!!

Jessie's Mom,

You might ask the natural doctor about Naturethroid or Armour Thyroid instead. These are natural supplements, not synthetic and contain, along with other components, T3 which may help give your daughter more energy! I took Synthroid for almost 10 years and just got worse and worse. At least I have energy with the Naturethroid which keeps my T3 up enough to function.

Hope you get some good help. Smiley

Remember to check out that book - it is groundbreaking (it is the first post on my forum)! Many doctors are finally catching on - at least the natural doctors. (Gluten is pretty big in helping Hashimoto's)

Check out this audio - it would be good to have it "under your belt" before you visit the new doctor:

Ignore the little ad at the very beginning: Smiley The interview that follows is ground breaking and absolutely the most important info to hear if a person has hashimoto's!

Let us know how things go on a new post in a few days.

Is she getting enough protein? If she won't eat meat, is she getting eggs at least? Animal protein really is what the human (animal) body best metabolizes as far as protein types, and at least utilizing dairy (limited dairy tho if there's any sensitivity to it) and eggs can help get some of that into the diet if not eating meat.
