Okay, after reading this new book I have been researching the gluten sensitivity connection to hashimotoes.  Wondering if anyone has gone gluten free and if I need to be tested.  I don't have any symptoms, but am of course always trying to do what is best for my body.  Would welcome any conversation about this.
Thanks!

I haven't been tested, but just bit the bullet and went gluten-free the first of the year. As long as I was at it, I went low carb in general for a month and lost some weight. Other than that, I'm not sure what it's doing for me, but I'm going to stick with it.

Betsy,

Are you antibodies still high? Did they go down at all while gluten free? Did you eat corn and if so, was it increased while gluten free? While going gluten free, are there any foods you increased to "make up" for the gluten free challenge? I am trying to figure out why my antibodies were tripled while going gluten free and one thing that I am suspecting is the corn intake - even though I ate organic products mostly.

Just wondering. Great discussion. Hope others will have something to add too.

I don't think they have tested my antibodies for awhile.  I was just reading that new book you suggested and it talked about gluten and its link to Hashi's.  I have also talked to a nutritionist about it and she also said there is a link.  I have not been tested for gluten sensitivity, just thought i could try gluten free, but if it tripled your antibodies now I am thinking differently.

Keep in mind I am not suggesting "gluten free" tripled my antibodies (I'm talking about thyroid antibodies here), but rather than what I did to substitute for my gluten foods might have been a problem. I think there is more to the "puzzle" than gluten free for Hashimoto's, unfortunately. I don't think it is bad to eliminate gluten but I am hoping that by preparing grains the more traditional way will allow us to enjoy them as God intended.

I am hoping to slowly move into a 90% or greater diet of traditionally prepared foods and will see if it positively affects my thyroid function. I don't think it will be an "over night" change, rather months or even over a year of eating this way. But I might be able to see improvements. We'll see how it goes.

I kind of feel the same way Mo.  I think that by reducing my gluten, I am making some better choices in food and in turn eating better.  Still confused about this issue.

Hi,

I have for the last month gone both gluten and wheat free, I have lost weight am not bloated, feel more energised and less fed up.

I would certainly say try it there are so many alternatives out there. (you need to watch out for hidden wheat and gluten in products) If it makes no difference to you then no harm done.

I am going to continue with the exclusion of wheat and gluten I feel so much better.

Nicky,

I am so glad you are feeling better without gluten. Are you eating any other grains? Which ones?

Also, would love to hear of an update in a few weeks too. Are you mostly concentrating on gluten free or are you also eliminating other things?

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the update!
